On July 27, 2023, the University of Malawi formalized a partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Astria Learning, an EdTech organization based in the United States. The primary objective of this MoU is to facilitate accessible education, with the University of Malawi offering short courses, undergraduate, and postgraduate programs through the Astria Learning platforms. An eCampus is set to be established, serving as a centralized hub for all online program-related content in collaboration with Astria Learning. Founded in 2009 by Dr. Jeff Bordes, Astria Learning operates in 17 countries, collaborating with over 300 universities, providing a comprehensive educational platform across various nations.
The MoU signing ceremony took place at the University of Malawi Office and was attended by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Samson Sajidu, alongside key members such as University Registrar Mr. Martin Matululu, Acting Deputy Registrar Mr. Alfred Itate Banda, and Director of Finance and Investment Mr. Enoch Njiwa. Executive Deans from the five schools within UNIMA and other staff members were also present.
Professor Sajidu, expressing gratitude to Astria Learning CEO Dr. Jeff Bordes, highlighted the significance of the e-learning platform in breaking down physical barriers and fostering international interactions among University of Malawi students. He emphasized that this aligns perfectly with the Malawi 2063 agenda and UNIMA’s 2022-2026 strategic plan, aiming to increase access to education and enhance international visibility.
During an interview, Dr. Bordes explained that Astria Learning’s digital library provides students with a diverse range of easily accessible reading materials. As a means of promoting accessibility to education, Astria Learning plans to offer affordable laptops and Astria tablets, facilitating online classes for Malawians.
The signing ceremony saw Professor Sajidu and Dr. Bordes formally signing the MoU, accompanied by a presentation of gifts from the University of Malawi to the Astria Learning guests. The event continued with a tour of the UNIMA campus, where the Astria Learning team admired the facilities. The day concluded with a dinner at Sunbird Ku Chawe.
